Scuba dive in its beautiful seas, or zip along a cable through the rainforest tree tops. There are so many adventure sports such as kayaking, rafting, rappelling, and horseback riding. Or take a trip to Panama City itself, a dramatic contrast between glassy skyscrapers and the narrow alleys and colorful facades of the atmospheric Casco Viejo, or old town, dating back to the 17th century. There are excursions to an Embera village, too, where you can learn about the traditional lifestyle of this rainforest tribe.

During these months, the climate is less humid and there is less rainfall. Celebrity Cruises reserves the right to impose a fuel supplement on all guests if the price of West Texas Intermediate fuel exceeds $65.00 per barrel. The fuel supplement for 1st and 2nd guests would be no more than $10 per guest per day, to a maximum of $140 per cruise; and for additional guests would be no more than $5 per person per day, to a maximum of $70 per cruise. Regent Seven Seas Cruises' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuts in November 2023 and its first two Panama Canal itineraries in early 2024 are already waitlisted.

As you pass through the Canal with Celebrity Cruises, you can learn about its history and its future, but you can also discover the beautiful sites that surround it, from the coffee plantations in Costa Rica to the Panamanian jungle. Old meets new in modern cities where the treasured elements are honored. The colonial walled city of Cartagena and Colon are two places you’ll want to visit on a Panama Canal cruise. Spend the day crossing Panama from the Caribbean side to the Pacific side with stops at Panama’s two Smithsonian Research Institutes on each end to learn about these unique environments. Discover the rhythms, flavors, and exquisite natural beauty of the Panama Canal and Central America on a wide array of shore excursions.

These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego, visits ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California. All of the crew members on the Infinity were pretty incredible, which greatly enhanced our experience during the two week voyage and our day transiting the Canal. Lectures and activities on the ship during sea days and in the evenings were among the best we’ve experienced on a cruise. There was always something to do and the CelebrityLife Activities team was fantastic. The crowd on board is largely composed of active retirees with very adventurous spirits, in addition to other cohorts sprinkled into the mix. On Edge-Series ships, the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, gives you uninterrupted sea views and is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or cocktail, enjoying the sea air.

This relaxing jungle voyage through the curvy lake was equally awesome for us. To be honest, we weren’t really that excited to be transiting the canal. We booked this repositioning cruise, as we often do, simply because it was a comfortable, convenient and economical way for us to get from one place on the map to another. Yet for many people, the entire reason behind booking such a cruise is for The Day you transit the Panama Canal. For us, the Canal was just an added bonus as we were making our way down from Florida to Chile. The Panama Canal is open to ships year-round, but the most pleasant time to cruise is in the winter season, from November to May.

Discover ancient ruins, breathtaking architecture, and beautiful rainforests. Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Grand Cayman—you can explore many distinctive destinations on one luxurious vacation. Central America has breathtaking natural areas, perfect for spotting wildlife or hitting the trails.

Passengers cooled off in the pool, some more active and heat-resistant folks ran the jogging track, while others staked out a window inside a much cooler interior bar. The main dining room eventually opened for lunch and we were fortunate enough to snag a table with a fantastic view to marvel at the beautiful Panama scenery passing us by as we rejoined some friends to each chow down on a three-course feast. By the night before our crossing, we were getting thoroughly geeked up for our transit. Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals.

Make the most of your time ashore with our range of imaginative excursions, from Destination Highlights to Small Group Discoveries and Private Journeys designed just for you. Explore the Panama Canal with Celebrity and you’ll enjoy the best of all worlds, from cultural immersion and pristine natural landscapes to a haven of relaxation on our contemporary, design-led ships. Rejuvenate your spirit in The Spa, unwind by the pool as you cruise along emerald shorelines, and toast the end of another perfect day at the Sunset Bar in the balmy warmth of a tropical evening. These tricked-out old American school busses were often our primary means of transportation throughout the three-month overland journey from Mexico to Panama we had embarked on earlier during this same year. It was an interesting throwback to a prior time in our trip to view the rough and chaotic means of transport we always relied on, now from the balcony stateroom of our refined luxury cruise. And while the cruise is undoubtedly a nicer means of transportation in everyway imaginable, these crazy chicken busses also have an adventurous & fun allure to them.

If you choose a cruise that includes a partial transit of the canal, you can experience Panama’s beauty during a day in Colon. Excursions from here include eco-adventures on Gatun Lake, where you can see capuchin and howler monkeys, caimans, and three-toed sloths. You could visit the locks along the canal and tour the visitor centers, stopping to watch ships pass through the narrow channels. Silversea Cruises' indulgent 31-day New York to Lima sailing aboard its newest ship, 728-guest Silver Nova features a Panama Canal transit in the middle of the trip. See the history of the Canal in film and exhibits and learn about the expansion project that added two locks and allowed for increased traffic and larger ships to pass through the Canal. Stand on the observation platform and take in a panoramic view of the Canal in action.

This final transit had come to an end and we could see Panama’s towering skyline off in the distance. We passed under the Bridge of the Americas, which seemed to be nerve-rackingly close to the top of the ship. We smoothly glided in as if a hand had slipped into a perfectly sized glove. The boat was roped-up to devices that looked like little train engines that appeared to be pulling us in. In actuality, we learned these were more so helping to steer and straighten the massive ship as it entered. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices.

In Panama itself, you’ll have a chance to look for wild sloths in the Gamboa rainforest, walk the cannon-lined walls of historic Spanish forts in Portobelo, and enjoy duty-free shopping in Colon. Once you reach Panama City, stroll the streets of Casco Viejo, the old center, set against a distant backdrop of the glittering skyscrapers of the modern city. The third and final set of locks was the Miraflores Locks, where we had previously visited in back in March.
